The five notes that survive Nigerian humidity

Why vanilla and oud outlast citrus, and how to shop with that in mind.

Two fragrances can perform completely differently on the same person in the same week, and the weather is usually the reason.

Humidity does not weaken a fragrance. It speeds it up, and the light notes are the first to leave.

The survivors

Vanilla and tonka, oud and agarwood, resins such as labdanum and benzoin, tobacco, and heavy woods like sandalwood and patchouli. These are large, slow molecules that stay on skin and cloth.

The casualties

Citrus, aquatic notes, light green florals and most ‘clean’ accords. They are not badly made; they are volatile by design, which is exactly why they smell refreshing.

How to shop with this in mind

For daytime, accept the shorter life and reapply, or buy the fresh scent in oil so the base holds it together. For anything that has to last, read the base notes first and the top notes last.
